There will be books, stories, poetry and great ideas on offer when Hamworthy Library hosts Poole Libraries’ Readers’ Day on Thursday 16 September.
Whatever your taste in books, whether you favour fiction or fact, come along from 11am when the event starts with morning coffee. Drinks will be followed by poetry and story sessions, ideas and book swaps. Bring along a couple of books you have read, and take some other titles away.
After lunch, which is available at the library’s excellent Bookbites Café, two special guests will take centre stage, talking about the book scene locally and regionally.
Tracey Guiry is the Chief Executive of Cyprus Well, the South West Literature Development Agency. She will be profiling the work of this lively new agency and introducing its website. There will also be a chance for guests to talk about their reading experiences in a feedback session.
Sue Luminati is the creator and driving force of Poole’s exciting Literary Festival planned for the end of October. She will be giving us the inside story and all the latest news of the festival and its impressive list of participating authors, from Michael Morpurgo to the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy.
Anyone is welcome to attend for the morning session from 11am, the afternoon from 1.30pm, or why not come along for the whole day. Book your free place in Hamworthy Library or by ringing 01202 672750.

The last cookery roadshows of the summer take place on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 September so come along for some innovative recipe ideas and learn how to make the most of your leftovers.
Friday’s event will be held in the Dolphin Shopping Centre, while Saturday’s event takes place on Poole Quay.
The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Chris Bulteel will cook-off against the Deputy Mayor, Cllr The Reverend Charles Meachin at the final event of the summer.
Each event will run between 10am-4pm.
Celebrity chef Richard Fox will demonstrate how to transform leftover food which may have ended up in the bin, into appetising meals. A third of the food we buy ends up in the bin and this waste can cause many environmental problems if it ends up in landfill.
Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for people to see and take part in a really interesting, hands-on cookery demonstration. Reducing waste, and particularly food waste, is important to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste sent to landfill. So these cookery roadshows are great for people to learn how to make meals from leftovers and reduce the amount of waste put in their black bins.”
So make sure you join us to be inspired by what you can do with leftovers from your Sunday roast and a whole host of other ingredients.
Local businesses could benefit from millions of pounds worth of work resulting from the construction of Poole’s Twin Sails Bridge.
Borough of Poole and Hochtief (UK) is staging a special ‘Meet the Contractor’ event at Upton House in Poole on Thursday 2 September 2010 to give local companies an opportunity to learn how they can bid for work linked to the building of the town’s second harbour crossing.
Project contractor Hochtief (UK) is offering 15 business packages ranging from architectural lighting to road marking and landscaping.
Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Local Economy, Borough of Poole, said: "The Twin Sails Bridge will stimulate new investment and create job opportunities in Poole over the next 10 to 15 years. However, we believe its construction can bring benefits to the local economy today. Hochtief is already working with several local firms and we would like to see many more benefit from the construction of the Twin Sails Bridge. We cannot give local businesses a guarantee of work but we can at least make sure they are aware of the opportunities available and encourage them to submit tenders in the future."
The Twin Sails Bridge will provide critical infrastructure for 26 hectares of brownfield land and unlock one of the largest regeneration sites in the South West. The regeneration is expected to deliver 2,000 homes and create up to 5,000 jobs over the next 15 years.
Hochtief (UK), one of the leading international providers of construction-related services, was appointed by Borough of Poole in April 2010 to build the Twin Sails Bridge and the immediate approach roads in Poole and Hamworthy. The 20-month construction phase of the £37 million regeneration project will see Poole’s second harbour crossing open in early 2012.
The ‘Meet the Contractor’ event, supported by Business Link and Dorset Business, is free and will be held at Upton House on Thursday 2 September 2010 between 9.30am to 12.30pm. Places are limited and must be booked in advance. For more information or to book a place, please email business.info@poole.gov.uk.
O2 today announces the launch of O2 Rugby Reunion, a nationwide initiative supported by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to encourage players that have drifted away from rugby to get back involved and put a team together. Teams will be invited to take part in one or more of a series of touch rugby events across the UK, culminating in a finale event in London’s Regent’sPark on 12th September with a chance of meeting some of the current England Rugby team.
Aimed at reigniting players passion for rugby, O2 Rugby Reunion uses Facebook to reconnect players with their old teams and make it easy for them to start playing again. Using the specially created O2 Rugby Reunion Facebook application a captain can register a team and interest in a specific touch rugby event, send invites to friends and confirm attendance at the event(s) once a minimum of six team members have been recruited.
Teams can then opt to take part in either the ‘fun’ or ‘competitive’ category for their local event. Teams can also come along on the day and register.
O2 has teamed up with 2003 World Cup winner and current London Irish Attack Coach Mike Catt to help raise awareness of the campaign. Commenting on the initiative Mike Catt said: “As both a coach and past England player I truly believe in the importance of keeping young players in the game. Rugby is a fun, sociable sport for players and fans alike and I hope that through O2 Rugby Reunion more players can reunite with their old team mates and rediscover their love of the game.”
There will be six regional touch rugby events taking place throughout the country as follows:
· Newcastle, Ryton RFC – Saturday 24th July
· London, Old Deer Park – Saturday 31st July
· Bristol, Portway Centre – Saturday 7th August
· Manchester, Broughton Park RFC – Saturday14th August
· Coventry, Coundon Hall Park – Saturday 21st August
· Bournemouth, Oakmedians RFC – Sunday 29th August
The finale event then takes place at London’s Regent’s Park on Sunday 12th September. Open to all, the event offers a day of rugby related fun for everyone including live music, a BBQ and a chance to meet some of the current England Rugby Team. Regional finalists in the competitive category will be invited to compete at the finale event in London’s Regent’s Park
Shadi Halliwell, Head of Brand, O2 said: “As proud sponsor of the England Rugby team we are passionate about supporting rugby at all levels of the game. O2 Rugby Reunion is a great way for ex-players to get back into the game and for friends and families to enjoy a fun packed day of rugby. We are delighted to be continuing our support of RFU’s Play On campaign and hope that it will encourage more people to return to the sport.”
O2 Rugby Reunion is part of the RFU’s Play On campaign, sponsored by O2, which aims at to keep more 16 – 24 year olds in the game as they move from school into higher education and beyond. The Play On campaign is supported by a network of O2 Pathfinders, over 1600 volunteers who guide players on their rugby journey by connecting them with clubs across the country.
Jenny Simms, Sponsorship Account Director, RFU said: “The Play On campaign is all about getting people back into the sport and O2 Rugby Reunion will be a vital part of the programme over the summer months. Showcasing others ways in which people can engage in rugby is an important strategy for the RFU and the O2 Rugby Reunion touch events have been created to ensure the best possible links to local clubs and the regional rugby communities. We are excited at the opportunity O2 has provided to reach a wider audience via O2 Rugby Reunion and facebook activity.”
